Early season games are when we figure out who the Timbers are. And yet, how much can we tell from a game played in a swamp? The ball was sloshing through puddles, our players were falling down, and we only lost because San Jose unleashed a thunderbolt Goal of the Year candidate. As fans, do we read a lot into this game? Read very little? It’s hard to say.

Six Degrees: Achievement Unlocked

In three seasons as coach of the Portland Timbers, Caleb Porter has overseen slow start after slow start after slow start. Three straight years without a win in March. Not a single stinkin’ win. It’s to the point where fans have started thinking, If we start well, if we can win even one single game in March, the rest of the league better watch out.

Memo to the rest of the league: watch out.
