Thorns FC: The Replacements

Today Thorns FC signed two players who appeared in the preseason tournament here in April: defender Kelli Hubly and midfielder Ashley Herndon. The two will serve as “field player replacements” for Brynjarsdottir and Nadim during the period the two regulars are away at the European championships.

In case you don’t remember them both played well during the preseason.

In the U-23 match both impressed me.  Here’s their PMRs from the linked post:

Hubly (+10/-2 : +4/-0 : +14/-2) Young Kelli Hubly would be one of my candidates for Woman of the Match. Terrific, solid outing from the walk-on from DePaul. Aggressive and active but seldom wrong-footed, Hubly looks like a terrific option up front for Portland. At this point she looks the best of the trialists to get an offer.

Herndon (60′ : +6/-1 : +2/-1 : +8/-3) A good match from young Ashley. Parsons seems to have directed her to play very far forward; she seemed to play as a striker as often as not. Despite that, she didn’t put an attempt on frame; improvement there would be good. Don’t know if she impressed enough to get signed, especially with the number of returning veterans, but a solid outing.

Both also played in the third and final preseason match against Houston.

Herndon (75′ +5/-2 : +6/-0 : +11/-2) Did a fine job on the left side of the attack, like Weber on both sides of the ball. Making a good case for herself as a non-rostered player. Great passing, dangerous runs.

Hubly (+3/-2 : +11/-2 : +14/-4) Played the full match, but Parsons switched her and Boureille at halftime, pushing Celeste back to DM and Hubly up. A terror on the right flank through the entire second half; run after devastating run.

I was wondering if the FO had stayed in touch with any of the amateurs from preseason and it appears that they did, and signed the two most promising to fill in for our European internationals.

So welcome back, Ashley and Kelli!

I was impressed by these two in the preseason as well. I thought it would have been a tossup among Hubly, Herndon, and Cox, except that the Thorns were thinner on the back line. I’m relieved they’re still around; they will be solid additions to the roster. Also, we might otherwise have a game with no field players on the bench.

Both of these trialist I thought were very promising and I only wish these young women could be paid more.Hopefully, this will lead to a chance with another club. Hubly reminds me of Dagny, tall with long legs and surprisingly fast. Herndon seemed very composed. Good for them!
